SR looking for freelance journalist

Street Roots is looking for experienced and hungry reporters who want to apply their talents to the world of nonprofit, advocacy journalism.

Description: This is a freelance position with payment issued upon publication.

Writers will be asked to cover important issues related to social and economic justice, with an understanding of the dynamics of poverty and homelessness.  Areas of coverage also include immigration/refugee issues, local, state and federal policy, high-profile individuals and celebrities, and culture. Stories may be long-term or short-term projects, ranging from one-week to a month or more turnaround. Street Roots has stories available twice monthly.

This person would report to the managing editor and work with the entire staff in securing sources, understanding the issues and developing appropriate story ideas.

This person would also be expected to attend regular meetings of the Editorial Committee and contribute ideas for coverage.

Qualifications: Candidates should have experience writing professional journalism. This person should be able to develop sources, investigate issues beyond the official line, and write engaging and compelling articles in ways not covered in mainstream newspapers.

This person should have a minimum of three years experienced in journalism in fields relevant to this position. This is not a position for activists interested in trying their hand at writing, but for a journalist serious about covering difficult and complex issues.

Payment: Feature pieces are paid a standard rate of $125-175 per article. Exceptions for additional payment can be made at the discretion of the managing editor.
