Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. David Wu have signed on to a missive urging to HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan to fund Section 8 vouchers for 285 families facing eviction due to program cuts.
Merkley and Wu join Sen. Ron Wyden in calling for action in preventing these families, all in Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook counties, from losing their homes and facing homelessness. Because of a funding shortfall from HUD, the Northwest Oregon Housing Authority sent notices to 285 Section 8 recipients informing them that as of July 1 they would no longer be receiving assistance.
The letter, pending Rep. Kurt Schrader’s signature:

We are paying for war on two fronts. Rural Americans should never be at risk of being swept into homelessness. Where is the “Real Deal” for the people of this country?
We need True homeland Security.
We need a Universal Living Wage and a Universal Living support system.
Housing Is A Human Right!
If Donovan does not reverse decades of Federal housing cutbacks, massive homelessness and policy failures, our cities will look like the slums of Calcutta. Does HUD’s new team have the political WILL to restore funding slashed during the Regan thru Bush years? If not, our neighborhoods will become burial grounds for the homeless.
